Pelham Humfrey (1647–1674) was an English composer of the Restoration era, renowned for his contributions to sacred music during a transformative period in British musical history. Born in London, Humfrey showed prodigious talent from a young age, joining the Chapel Royal as a boy soprano and later studying in France and Italy, where he absorbed continental influences that enriched his style. Appointed Master of the Children of the Chapel Royal in 1664, he composed anthems, motets, and songs that blended English polyphony with innovative Baroque elements, earning praise for their expressive depth and technical finesse. Despite his short life, cut tragically by illness at age 27, Humfrey's legacy endures through his elegant vocal works, which capture the spiritual fervor of the time and continue to inspire performers and scholars alike.
