Returning to Brazil, Salles Gomes founded the São Paulo International Film Festival and contributed significantly to the Cinema Novo movement, advocating for a decolonized cinematic voice. His seminal work, New Latin American Cinema, Volume 2: Studies of National Cinemas, offers meticulous analyses of national film industries, highlighting their socio-political dimensions.
