Paul Beatty
About the Author
Paul Beatty is an acclaimed American author and poet whose incisive prose fearlessly dissects the absurdities of race, identity, and American culture. Born in Los Angeles in 1962, Beatty studied psychology at UCLA before earning an MFA in creative writing from Columbia University. His debut novel, Slumberland, introduced readers to a world of jazz-infused satire, while his breakthrough work, The Sellout, catapulted him to international fame, winning the Man Booker Prize in 2016 for its bold exploration of racial satire and segregation in contemporary America. A former slam poet and hip-hop enthusiast, Beatty's writing often blends humor, history, and social critique, earning him comparisons to the likes of Ralph Ellison and Thomas Pynchon. He currently resides in New York City, continuing to challenge literary norms with his unflinching voice.
