About the Author

Panait Istrati, born in 1884 in the Romanian region of Brăila, was a prolific writer whose life was as adventurous and tumultuous as the narratives he crafted. Emerging from humble beginnings as the son of a laundress and an absent Greek smuggler father, Istrati's early years were marked by wanderlust, poverty, and a series of odd jobs that took him across Europe and beyond. Influenced by his encounters with anarchism, socialism, and the marginalized, he began writing in the 1920s, gaining acclaim for his semi-autobiographical tales that vividly portrayed the struggles of the underclass. His friendship with Romain Rolland propelled him to international fame, though Istrati's uncompromising spirit led to conflicts with both communist ideologies and literary establishments. Despite chronic illness and personal hardships, he produced a rich body of work until his death in 1935, leaving a legacy as a voice for the voiceless in Romanian and French literature. Notable among his works is 'Mihail,' a poignant exploration of youthful rebellion and societal constraints.
