Owen Chase was a seasoned Nantucket whaler whose life at sea took a dramatic turn during the fateful voyage of the Essex in 1820. As the first mate, he survived the ship's sinking after it was rammed by a vengeful sperm whale, an ordeal that inspired Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. Chase's firsthand account, published in 1821, offers a gripping narrative of survival, cannibalism, and the perils of the Pacific. Rescued after weeks adrift, he returned to a life of maritime pursuits, including further whaling expeditions and command of vessels.
