Osborne Russell
About the Author
Osborne Russell was an intrepid American frontiersman and trapper whose life on the untamed Western frontier defined an era of exploration and survival. Born in 1810 in Maine, Russell ventured west at a young age, joining fur-trapping expeditions that took him through the rugged landscapes of the Rocky Mountains from 1834 to 1843. His experiences among Native American tribes, encounters with wildlife, and the harsh realities of mountain life are vividly captured in his writings, offering a firsthand account of the American West before widespread settlement. After leaving the mountains, Russell settled in Oregon, where he contributed to early statehood efforts and lived until his death in 1892. His journal remains a cornerstone of Western literature, blending adventure, observation, and historical insight into the vanishing world of the fur trade.
