Omprakash Valmiki (1950-2013) was a pioneering Indian writer and social activist whose unflinching narratives illuminated the harsh realities of caste discrimination and untouchability in contemporary India. Born into the Valmiki community, traditionally considered 'untouchable,' Valmiki drew from his personal experiences of prejudice and marginalization to craft powerful autobiographies and essays that challenged societal norms and advocated for Dalit rights. His seminal work, Joothan: An Untouchable's Life, published in 1997, became a cornerstone of Dalit literature, offering a raw, poignant account of his struggles from childhood poverty to adulthood resilience, and sparking widespread discourse on social justice.
