About the Author

Robert Hamilton Bishop, born in Scotland in 1777 and educated at the University of Edinburgh, emigrated to America in 1796, where he pursued a calling in the Presbyterian ministry and education. Ordained in 1801, he served as a pastor in Kentucky before his appointment in 1824 as the inaugural president of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, a position he held until 1841. A fervent advocate for moral and intellectual development, Bishop delivered stirring addresses that inspired generations of students, emphasizing piety, scholarship, and civic duty. His tenure at Miami University marked a pivotal era in American higher education, fostering institutions that shaped the Midwest's cultural landscape. Bishop's later years were devoted to abolitionism and missionary work, leaving a legacy of principled leadership until his death in 1855.
