Li Yu (937-978), the last emperor of the Southern Tang dynasty, is celebrated as one of China's most poignant lyric poets, whose verses capture the profound sorrow of loss and exile. Born into imperial privilege in Jinling, he ascended the throne in 961, ruling a culturally vibrant but politically precarious state amid the turmoil of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. His reign ended in 975 when his kingdom fell to the Song dynasty, leading to his capture and demotion to a mere prince, where he penned his most famous works reflecting on the impermanence of glory and the ache of separation from his homeland.
