About the Author

Liu Yiqing (403–444 CE), a prominent scholar-official of the Southern Dynasties during the Liu Song period, is celebrated for his contributions to Chinese literature, particularly in the realm of anecdotal biography and historical narrative. Born into the imperial Liu family, he served in various administrative roles, including governor of several provinces, where his keen observations of human nature and society informed his writing. Liu's most enduring legacy is the compilation of Shishuo Xinyu (A New Account of Tales of the World), a seminal work that captures the wit, eccentricities, and cultural milieu of the Wei-Jin period through concise, vivid vignettes. Though he authored other historical texts, his influence endures through this collection, which has shaped literary traditions for centuries, offering timeless insights into character and conversation.
