Mrs. Oliphant
About the Author
Margaret Oliphant, known professionally as Mrs. Oliphant, was a prolific Scottish novelist, biographer, and critic of the Victorian era, whose vast literary output spanned over a century of cultural shifts and personal triumphs. Born in 1828 in Wallyford, near Edinburgh, she began writing to support her family after her husband's early death, producing more than 100 works of fiction, including domestic novels that explored the intricacies of family life, social expectations, and moral dilemmas. Her keen observations of middle-class society, infused with wit and empathy, made her a beloved chronicler of 19th-century England. Oliphant also ventured into supernatural tales and historical biographies, such as her acclaimed life of Edward Irving, while editing periodicals and raising her children. Despite her immense productivity—often writing amid grief and financial strain—she remained a pillar of Victorian literature until her death in 1897, leaving a legacy of insightful narratives that continue to resonate with readers today.
