About the Author

Miguel Pinero was a pioneering force in the Nuyorican literary movement, emerging from the gritty streets of New York City's Lower East Side as a former inmate who channeled his raw experiences into electrifying plays and poetry. Born in Puerto Rico in 1946 and raised in the barrios of Manhattan, Pinero's life was marked by incarceration, addiction, and an unyielding passion for storytelling that captured the pulse of urban Latino life. His breakthrough work, Short Eyes, premiered off-Broadway in 1974, earning him an Obie Award and establishing him as a voice for the marginalized. Through the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, which he co-founded, Pinero championed spoken word and theater that defied mainstream norms, leaving an indelible legacy of authenticity and rebellion in American literature until his death in 1988.
