Born in Philadelphia in 1925, she graduated from Radcliffe College and later taught at institutions including Tufts University, where she mentored generations of writers. Kumin's poetry often blended rural imagery with sharp social commentary, earning her the 1973 Pulitzer for Poetry for 'Up Country.' Her close friendship and collaboration with Anne Sexton inspired enduring tributes, including her editorship of 'The Complete Poems: Anne Sexton,' a definitive collection that preserves her friend's legacy.
