Max Horkheimer
About the Author
Max Horkheimer (1895–1973) was a German philosopher and sociologist, renowned as a founding figure of the Frankfurt School of critical theory. Born in Stuttgart, he studied philosophy at the University of Frankfurt, where he later became director of the Institute for Social Research. Horkheimer's work profoundly influenced 20th-century thought, blending Marxism, psychoanalysis, and Enlightenment critique to expose the dialectical tensions within modern society. Collaborating closely with Theodor Adorno, he co-authored seminal texts that dissect the culture industry, instrumental reason, and the mythologizing tendencies of progress. His interdisciplinary approach continues to inspire scholars in philosophy, sociology, and cultural studies, challenging readers to confront the emancipatory potential and authoritarian risks of rationality in an increasingly administered world.
