About the Author

Max Brod was a prolific Czech writer, composer, and journalist, best known for his profound friendship with Franz Kafka and his pivotal role in preserving the latter's literary legacy. Born in Prague in 1884, Brod studied law but pursued a multifaceted career in literature and music, authoring novels, essays, and biographies that captured the intellectual ferment of early 20th-century Europe. Despite Kafka's explicit instructions to destroy his unpublished works upon his death in 1924, Brod defied the wish, editing and publishing seminal texts like The Trial and The Castle, thereby introducing Kafka's genius to the world. Brod's own writings, including his seminal biography Franz Kafka: A Biography, offer intimate insights into Kafka's tormented psyche and the cultural milieu of Prague's German-Jewish community. A Zionist and advocate for Jewish culture, Brod fled Nazi persecution in 1939, settling in Palestine where he continued his creative endeavors until his death in 1968. His life exemplified the intersections of art, friendship, and moral courage.
