Matthew Gregory Lewis, born in 1775, was an English novelist, playwright, and politician whose literary legacy is dominated by his sensational Gothic masterpiece, The Monk. Educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, Lewis's early fascination with the supernatural and the macabre propelled him to literary fame at the tender age of nineteen. Drawing inspiration from German Sturm und Drang literature, he crafted tales of horror, seduction, and moral decay that shocked Regency-era readers. Beyond The Monk, Lewis contributed to the stage with plays like The Castle Spectre and ventured into poetry and travel writing, including a vivid account of his Jamaican plantation life. His works, blending vivid imagination with social commentary, influenced the Romantic movement and continue to captivate enthusiasts of dark fiction. Lewis died in 1818, leaving an indelible mark on Gothic literature.
