Matteo Bandello
About the Author
Matteo Bandello (1485-1561) was an Italian Dominican friar, poet, and prolific writer whose collection of novellas profoundly influenced European literature during the Renaissance. Born in Castelnuovo Scrivia, he served as a bishop and diplomat while cultivating a circle of intellectuals, including nobility and artists. Bandello's works, drawn from real-life tales and folklore, explore themes of love, fate, and human passion with vivid realism and moral insight. His 214 novellas, published in two volumes in 1554 and 1573, served as sources for renowned playwrights like Shakespeare, whose 'Romeo and Juliet' was inspired by Bandello's tale of star-crossed lovers. Celebrated for bridging Italian humanism with dramatic storytelling, Bandello's legacy endures as a cornerstone of narrative fiction.
