Master Sheng-Yen (1930-2009) was a renowned Chinese Buddhist monk, scholar, and teacher who revitalized Chan (Zen) Buddhism in the modern world. Born in mainland China, he endured the hardships of war and political upheaval before establishing the Dharma Drum Mountain organization in Taiwan, which became a global center for Buddhist practice and education. As the 57th generational patriarch of the Linji school of Chan, Master Sheng-Yen authored numerous books that bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary life, guiding readers toward mindfulness, ethical living, and enlightenment.
