About the Author

Mary Prince was an enslaved woman of African descent born in Bermuda in the late 18th century, whose extraordinary life story became one of the most powerful abolitionist narratives of its time. Kidnapped from her family at a young age, she endured brutal treatment across multiple households in the West Indies and later in England, where she sought refuge and freedom. In 1831, at the urging of abolitionists, Prince dictated her autobiography, The History of Mary Prince, which vividly exposed the horrors of slavery and fueled the British anti-slavery movement. Her unflinching account of physical and emotional suffering, resilience, and quest for liberty remains a cornerstone of Black women's literature and a testament to the human spirit's endurance against unimaginable oppression.
