Born in 1921 in Vilnius, Lithuania, she fled Soviet occupation during World War II, eventually settling in the United States where she became a professor at UCLA and founded the Center for the Study of Indo-European and the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures. Gimbutas's research, blending archaeology, mythology, and linguistics, challenged patriarchal interpretations of history by highlighting the matriarchal and egalitarian societies of Neolithic Europe. Her seminal book 'Baltu Mitologija: Senoves Lietuviu Deives IR Dievai' explores the ancient Lithuanian pantheon, illuminating the enduring spiritual heritage of the Baltic peoples.
