Marie Hall Ets was a pioneering American author and illustrator whose gentle, evocative storytelling captured the wonder of childhood and the beauty of diverse cultures. Born in 1895 in North Greenfield, Wisconsin, she studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later worked as a social worker before dedicating herself to children's literature. Ets's works often drew from her travels and observations, blending simple narratives with luminous illustrations that emphasized empathy, nature, and everyday magic. Her debut book, Mister Penny (1935), marked the beginning of a celebrated career spanning over two decades, earning her the Caldecott Medal for Nine Days to Christmas in 1960. Throughout her life, Ets championed themes of kindness and cultural understanding, leaving a lasting legacy in children's books until her passing in 1984.
