Marco Anneo Lucano, known to posterity as Lucan, was a Roman poet born in Corduba (modern-day Córdoba, Spain) in 39 AD, whose brief but brilliant life ended tragically at age 26 under the orders of Emperor Nero. Educated in Rome under the Stoic philosopher Seneca the Younger, Lucan's literary talent flourished amid the political turmoil of the early Roman Empire. His magnum opus, the epic poem Pharsalia, chronicles the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey, blending vivid historical detail with rhetorical grandeur and a staunch republican ethos that subtly critiques imperial tyranny. Forced to commit suicide in 65 AD for alleged involvement in the Pisonian conspiracy, Lucan's legacy endures as a voice of resistance and poetic innovation in classical literature, influencing generations of writers with his unflinching portrayal of ambition's destructive force.
