Manuel Chaves Nogales was a Spanish journalist and writer whose work captured the turmoil of early twentieth-century Spain with unflinching honesty. Born in Seville in 1897, he rose to prominence as a liberal voice during the Second Republic, editing the influential newspaper Ahora. His reporting from both sides of the Civil War revealed the human cost of ideological conflict, leading to his exile in France and later England, where he continued writing until his death in 1944.
