Louis Barthas
About the Author
Louis Barthas was a French barrelmaker from Béziers whose life was irrevocably altered by the outbreak of World War I, transforming him from a skilled artisan into a frontline soldier known as a poilu. Drafted in 1914, he endured the brutal trenches of the Western Front for four grueling years, witnessing the horrors of Verdun, the Somme, and countless other battles that claimed millions of lives. Throughout his service, Barthas meticulously documented his experiences in notebooks, capturing the raw realities of mud, fear, camaraderie, and the senseless carnage of industrialized warfare. Post-war, these writings remained private until their posthumous publication, offering an unvarnished, soldier's-eye perspective on the Great War that contrasts sharply with official narratives and glorifying accounts.
