Lewis Grassic Gibbon, born James Leslie Mitchell in 1901 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was a pioneering Scottish novelist whose works vividly captured the rhythms of rural life and the socio-economic upheavals of early 20th-century Britain. Drawing from his own experiences growing up on a farm and his later travels as a journalist and soldier, Gibbon infused his writing with a deep sense of place and the struggles of ordinary folk against harsh landscapes and changing times.
