About the Author
Laonikos Chalkokondyles (c. 1430–c. 1470) was a distinguished Byzantine historian and scholar, born in Athens into a prominent family of intellectuals. A student of the renowned Plethon at Mistra, he later served as a courtier in the Ottoman Empire after the fall of Constantinople in 1453, where he witnessed the dramatic shifts in the Eastern Mediterranean. His magnum opus, The Histories (Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library) (Volume I), chronicles the rise of the Ottoman Turks and the decline of Byzantium from 1298 to 1463, blending classical historiographical traditions with eyewitness accounts to offer a poignant reflection on empire and cultural transformation.
