Born in Kawasaki in 1941, he began his career as a teenager, blending traditional enka with Western pop influences to create timeless melodies that resonated deeply with post-war Japan. His breakthrough hit, 'Sukiyaki,' topped the U.S. Billboard charts in 1963, making him the first Asian artist to achieve such a milestone and symbolizing a bridge between Eastern and Western cultures.
