Born in 1906 in Brünn, Austria-Hungary (now Brno, Czech Republic), Gödel studied at the University of Vienna, where he earned his doctorate in 1929. His most celebrated contribution, the incompleteness theorems outlined in his 1931 paper 'On Formally Undecidable Propositions of Principia Mathematica and Related Systems,' demonstrated that within any sufficiently powerful axiomatic system, there exist true statements that cannot be proven, challenging the Hilbert program and reshaping our understanding of truth and provability.
