Koizumi Yakumo, better known as Lafcadio Hearn, was a Greek-Irish writer and journalist who profoundly influenced Japanese literature through his evocative retellings of folklore and ghost stories. Born in 1850 on the Ionian island of Lefkada, Hearn immigrated to the United States and later Japan, where he married a Japanese woman, adopted the name Koizumi Yakumo, and became a naturalized citizen.
