Katsu Kokichi
About the Author
Katsu Kokichi (1802–1850) was a low-ranking samurai of the Tokugawa shogunate in Edo-period Japan, whose life offers a rare glimpse into the world of the lesser warrior class. Born into a family of firefighters and minor retainers, Kokichi navigated the rigid social hierarchies of feudal Japan with a blend of irreverence and resilience, engaging in pursuits from swordsmanship to street brawls and entrepreneurial ventures. His autobiography, Musui's Story: The Autobiography of a Tokugawa Samurai, written in his later years, provides an unvarnished account of his unconventional path, challenging romanticized notions of bushido and revealing the everyday struggles and freedoms of samurai life. Discovered and published posthumously, Kokichi's narrative remains a vital primary source for historians and enthusiasts of Japanese history, capturing the vibrant underbelly of a transforming society on the cusp of modernization.
