Kang Kyeong-Ae
About the Author
Kang Kyeong-Ae (1906-1944) was a pioneering Korean writer whose poignant narratives captured the struggles of the oppressed during the Japanese colonial era. Born into poverty in Manchuria, she experienced firsthand the hardships of rural life and labor exploitation, themes that permeate her fiction. Despite her short life, marked by personal tragedies including the loss of her children and her own untimely death from illness, Kang's work stands as a testament to resilience and social conscience. Her stories, often drawn from the lives of farmers, miners, and women in marginalized communities, blend stark realism with deep empathy, influencing generations of Korean literature. Today, she is celebrated for giving voice to the voiceless in early 20th-century Korea.
