Jurji Zaidan was a pioneering Arab intellectual, historian, and novelist born in Beirut in 1861, whose multifaceted career bridged the worlds of scholarship and literature during the late Ottoman era. Educated in medicine and history, he founded the influential journal Al-Hilal in Cairo, which promoted Arab cultural revival and education. As a novelist, Zaidan crafted historical fiction that vividly reconstructed pivotal moments in Islamic and Arab history, blending meticulous research with engaging narratives to inspire national pride and intellectual awakening among readers. His works, such as Fath al-Andalus (فتح الأندلس) Conquest of Andalus, exemplify his commitment to illuminating the triumphs and complexities of the Arab past. Zaidan passed away in 1914, leaving a lasting legacy as a father of the modern Arab historical novel.
