Julia Dent Grant
About the Author
Julia Dent Grant, born in 1826 in St. Louis, Missouri, was the devoted wife of Ulysses S. Grant, the eighteenth President of the United States and a celebrated Civil War general. Growing up in a prosperous slaveholding family, she met her future husband at a social gathering and married him in 1848, embarking on a life marked by military postings, wartime separations, and the challenges of raising four children amid national turmoil. Despite her visual impairment from childhood eye issues, Julia emerged as a keen observer of history, documenting her experiences with candor and grace. Her memoir, The Personal Memoirs of Julia Dent Grant (Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant), published posthumously in 1975, offers an intimate glimpse into the private world of one of America's most iconic couples, blending personal anecdotes with insights into the Grant presidency and the era's social upheavals. Julia passed away in 1902, leaving a legacy as a resilient First Lady and a voice for the domestic side of greatness.
