Juana Ines De La Cruz
About the Author
Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648–1695), often hailed as the 'Tenth Muse' of Mexico, was a groundbreaking Baroque poet, playwright, and scholar whose intellectual prowess challenged the patriarchal constraints of colonial New Spain. Born in San Miguel Nepantla, she displayed prodigious talent from childhood, mastering Latin by age three and entering the royal court as a lady-in-waiting by fifteen. Rejecting marriage, she joined the Order of Saint Jerome in 1669, where she pursued her voracious studies in theology, philosophy, science, and literature, amassing a vast library. Through her eloquent defenses of women's right to education, such as in her famous 'Respuesta a Sor Filotea,' she became a feminist icon, blending sharp wit, religious devotion, and bold critique in works that continue to inspire global audiences with their timeless advocacy for knowledge and autonomy.
