Joseph Heco
About the Author
Joseph Heco, born Hamada Hikozō in 1837 near Onoura, Japan, became the first Japanese national to gain American citizenship after surviving a shipwreck in 1850 that cast him adrift across the Pacific to California. Rescued and educated in the United States, he returned to Japan in 1860 amid the turbulent opening of the nation to Western influences, where he worked as an interpreter, journalist, and entrepreneur, contributing to early diplomatic and commercial exchanges. Heco's writings, particularly his memoir 'The Narrative of a Japanese,' offer a rare firsthand account of his extraordinary life, spanning shipwrecks, cultural clashes, and the dawn of Japan's modernization. Through his narrative, he bridges East and West, providing invaluable insights into 19th-century global encounters and personal resilience in the face of profound change.
