John Steptoe was a pioneering African American author and illustrator whose work illuminated the richness of Black culture and folklore for young readers. Born in 1950 in Brooklyn, New York, he displayed remarkable artistic talent from an early age, publishing his first book, Stevie, at just 16. Steptoe's stories often drew from African traditions and urban life, blending vibrant illustrations with narratives that celebrated resilience, beauty, and moral lessons. His masterpiece, Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, a retelling of a Shona folktale, earned widespread acclaim, including a Caldecott Honor, for its stunning artwork and empowering message about inner kindness. Tragically passing away in 1989 at age 38, Steptoe left an enduring legacy, inspiring generations of children's book creators to embrace diverse voices and perspectives in literature.
