John Rodgers Jewitt (1783–1821) was an American blacksmith and ironsmith whose life took a dramatic turn during the War of 1812, when he was captured by the Nuu-chah-nulth people of Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island. Serving as a captive and metalworker to the chief Maquinna for nearly three years, Jewitt meticulously documented his harrowing experiences in a journal that later formed the basis of his renowned narrative. After his eventual rescue in 1808, he returned to civilization, married, and settled in the United States, where he worked as a silversmith.
