John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) was a prominent English Evangelical Anglican bishop, theologian, and author whose writings profoundly influenced Victorian-era Christianity. Born into a wealthy family in Park Lodge, Macclesfield, he pursued studies at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, before entering the clergy in 1841. Serving as vicar of Helmingham and later Stradbroke, Ryle became known for his straightforward exposition of biblical truths and his staunch defense of Protestant principles against ritualism and Roman Catholicism. Appointed the first Bishop of Liverpool in 1880, he championed evangelical causes through pastoral work and prolific publications.
