Johann Gerhard (1582–1637) was a preeminent Lutheran theologian and scholar of the early seventeenth century, widely regarded as one of the foremost intellects of the orthodox period in Protestant thought. Born in Quedlinburg, Germany, he studied at the University of Jena and went on to serve as superintendent of churches in Heldburg and Coburg, where he dedicated his life to biblical exegesis, doctrinal clarification, and pastoral instruction.
