Joaquín Torres-García (1874–1949) was a pioneering Uruguayan artist whose innovative spirit bridged European modernism and indigenous Latin American traditions, profoundly influencing the trajectory of 20th-century art. Born in Montevideo, he spent formative years in Barcelona and Paris, where he collaborated with luminaries like Picasso and Braque, absorbing Cubism and Constructivism before developing his signature 'Constructive Universalism.' Returning to Uruguay in 1934, Torres-García founded the Universal Constructivism movement, blending geometric abstraction with symbolic motifs drawn from pre-Columbian cultures and universal grids.
