About the Author

João Rodrigues, a pioneering Portuguese Jesuit missionary and scholar, dedicated much of his life to the cultural and linguistic exchange between Europe and East Asia during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born in Portugal around 1561, he arrived in Japan in 1577, immersing himself in its society amid the turbulent period of Christian missions and eventual persecution. Fluent in Japanese, Rodrigues served as an interpreter for notable figures, including Tokugawa Ieyasu, and documented his observations with remarkable insight. His seminal work, Arte da Lingoa de Iapam, published in 1604, stands as one of the earliest comprehensive grammars of the Japanese language, bridging Eastern and Western scholarly traditions and preserving invaluable knowledge of feudal Japan for posterity.
