About the Author

間宮 林蔵 (Mamiya Rinzō) was a pioneering Japanese explorer and cartographer of the late Edo period, renowned for his daring expeditions into the uncharted territories of northern Ezo, now known as Hokkaido. Born in 1775 in what is present-day Iwate Prefecture, he served as a surveyor for the Tokugawa shogunate, embarking on voyages that mapped the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, and the rugged coasts of the far north. His meticulous observations of geography, indigenous Ainu cultures, and natural resources provided invaluable insights into Japan's northern frontiers amid growing Russian interests. Mamiya's writings, preserved in the multi-volume '北蝦夷地部' series, blend detailed surveys with vivid accounts of perilous journeys, offering a window into the era's exploratory spirit and the clash of empires. Though his life ended in obscurity in 1844, his legacy endures as a cornerstone of Japanese historical geography.
