James Africanus Beale Horton (1835–1883) was a pioneering Sierra Leonean physician, soldier, and intellectual whose groundbreaking contributions to African studies and advocacy for self-determination continue to resonate today. Born in Sierra Leone to a family of liberated slaves, Horton received an elite education in medicine at King's College, London, becoming one of the first West Africans to earn a medical degree from a European university. Serving as a surgeon in the British colonial forces, he traveled extensively across West Africa, where he documented the region's societies, economies, and potential for independence.
