Jack D. Forbes was a pioneering scholar, historian, and activist whose work profoundly shaped the understanding of indigenous and African American histories in the Americas. Born in 1934 to parents of Native American and African American descent, Forbes dedicated his career to challenging Eurocentric narratives and illuminating the intertwined experiences of colonized peoples. As a professor at the University of California, Davis, he founded the Native American Studies program, advocating for cultural preservation and social justice. His seminal book, Africans and Native Americans: The Language of Race and the Evolution of Red-Black Peoples, explores the linguistic and historical connections between African and Native populations, redefining racial categories and colonial legacies. Forbes's interdisciplinary approach blended anthropology, linguistics, and history, influencing generations of scholars and activists until his passing in 2006.
