About the Author
John Millington Synge (1871-1909) was an Irish playwright, poet, and prose writer whose works profoundly influenced the Irish Literary Revival and modern drama. Born in Dublin, Synge studied music and literature before traveling extensively in Europe, where he encountered the works of Henrik Ibsen and the Aran Islands, which inspired his fascination with Irish peasant life and folklore. Encouraged by W.B. Yeats, he joined the Abbey Theatre, becoming a key figure in its founding. Synge's plays, characterized by their raw dialogue and exploration of human passions, often drew controversy for their unvarnished portrayal of Irish rural existence. Despite his short life, cut short by illness, his legacy endures through works that capture the lyrical beauty and harsh realities of the Irish countryside, blending tragedy with poetic intensity.
