About the Author
J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur, born Michel Guillaume Jean de Crèvecoeur in 1735 in Normandy, France, was a visionary writer and farmer who immigrated to America in 1754, seeking new horizons amid the colonial fervor. Settling in New York, he immersed himself in agrarian life, marrying, raising a family, and observing the diverse tapestry of early American society. His seminal work, Letters from an American Farmer and Sketches of Eighteenth-Century America, published in 1782, offers poignant reflections on the American identity, the melting pot of cultures, and the virtues of rural simplicity, blending personal narrative with philosophical insight to capture the spirit of a nascent nation. Tragically, the Revolutionary War upended his idyllic existence, forcing him to flee and later return to Europe as a diplomat, where he continued to advocate for transatlantic understanding until his death in 1813.
