Ignacio MartíN-Baró
About the Author
Ignacio Martín-Baró was a pioneering Spanish-born Jesuit priest, psychologist, and social activist who dedicated his life to understanding and alleviating the psychological impacts of oppression in Latin America. Born in 1942, he moved to El Salvador in 1965, where he joined the Society of Jesus and immersed himself in the turbulent socio-political landscape of the region. As a professor at the University of Central America in San Salvador, Martín-Baró developed the framework of liberation psychology, emphasizing the role of social structures in mental health and advocating for the empowerment of marginalized communities. His work bridged theology, psychology, and human rights, challenging the status quo during El Salvador's civil war. Tragically assassinated in 1989 alongside fellow Jesuits, his legacy endures as a beacon for socially engaged scholarship and resistance against injustice.
