About the Author

Hugh Lofting (1886–1947) was an English-born author, poet, and physician best known for creating the beloved character Doctor Dolittle, a veterinarian who discovers he can talk to animals and embarks on whimsical adventures around the world. Inspired by the horrors of World War I, where Lofting served as a gunner and sketched animal tales to entertain his siblings, he penned the first Doctor Dolittle book in 1920 while recovering from injuries. The series, which blends fantasy, humor, and gentle moral lessons, captivated young readers and earned Lofting the Newbery Medal for The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle in 1923. Beyond children's literature, Lofting explored poetry and historical fiction, but his enduring legacy lies in the enchanting world of Dolittle's animal companions and exploratory spirit, influencing generations of storytellers and animal lovers alike.
