Herbert Spencer
About the Author
Herbert Spencer (1820–1903) was an English philosopher, biologist, and social theorist whose influential writings sought to explain society, morality, and knowledge through principles of evolution and development. A prominent Victorian intellectual, he championed individual liberty, argued for limited government, and helped shape early sociological thought. His wide-ranging work connected scientific ideas with questions of ethics, politics, education, and social organization. Spencer’s writing is marked by ambitious synthesis and a determination to construct comprehensive explanations of human life and culture. His major early work, Social Statics: The Conditions Essential to Happiness Specified, and the First of Them Developed, established themes that continued throughout his career.
