Henry George Liddell

Henry George Liddell (1811–1898) was a distinguished British scholar, educator, and lexicographer whose contributions to classical studies remain foundational. Educated at Charterhouse School and Christ Church, Oxford, he rose to prominence as Headmaster of Westminster School from 1846 to 1855, where he championed rigorous classical education. Later serving as Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, Liddell immersed himself in Greek philology, collaborating with Robert Scott on the monumental Greek-English Lexicon, first published in 1843 and continually revised to become the definitive reference for ancient Greek language and literature. Beyond lexicography, he was a devoted family man, father to Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and his scholarly legacy endures in the halls of academia worldwide.
